First and foremost, your designs should be unique. This can easily be achieved by finding your own niche. You don’t have to invent something entirely new, but you should make sure that what you are designing is significantly different from anything else on offer out there. There is no point in just churning out cheap copies of other people’s work, as these will not sell well.

If you come up with an idea that is truly innovative and original, it will probably become very popular very quickly. Even if what you are doing doesn’t appear to be at first glance, it’s probably worth checking with a lawyer to ensure that someone hasn’t already come up with something very similar—or even identical—to what you are planning on offering.

2) Do Your Research

One of my first and most powerful lessons as an entrepreneur came during my first project, a tee-shirt line called T-Kulture. I spent nearly three months researching and producing my design concepts before making any moves. It also helps to find out what problems people have with existing products in order to create something new that fills those needs better than anything else out there!

3) Find Someone With Deep Pockets

Every successful clothing business has one thing in common: capital. The days of hand-stitching garments in your basement are over. You’ll need some startup capital to lease a small factory, hire out freelance help and purchase raw materials, among other things. Most experts recommend saving at least $25,000 as seed money.

But depending on your industry and goals, you may need more or less than that. It’s wise to talk with others who’ve launched similar businesses to see how much they raised and what they used it for. The more information you have going into it, the better off you’ll be later on.

That said, flimsy and inexpensive fabrics tend to look quite good when they are manufactured into apparel—the secret is to make sure that your trimming and accessories have some heft to them.

And yes, there is such a thing as being too skimpy when it comes to designing your clothing line—you don’t want to take advantage of customers or give them anything less than quality. But, at least at first, buy something cheap and see how it looks. You might be surprised!

8) Get everything made overseas in bulk, but don’t compromise on quality

Keeping your costs down will be paramount to making your venture profitable. If you’re having clothing manufactured, don’t skimp on materials; you need to ensure that what you’re selling is well-made and durable enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. Plus, buying from overseas—specifically China or Bangladesh—might mean getting slapped with steep tariffs if it ever gets imported into North America (or Europe).

And even though there are plenty of cheap manufacturing options in Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam and Cambodia, I wouldn’t recommend them because of recent labor issues. The best place to go is China: You can have garments made there for about $2 per piece. As an added bonus, Chinese factories typically have short lead times of just one week or less.

9) Don’t listen to people who tell you you won’t make it as a clothing brand

You’re doing what you love and pursuing your passion, so don’t listen to people who tell you that you won’t make it as a clothing brand. Just because they are not succeeding at what they want to do, doesn’t mean you can’t succeed at it. You have different strengths and different weaknesses than others, which means if they fail—you will be able to succeed. With hard work and perseverance, there is no reason why you can’t achieve success. So keep going! Don’t give up on your dreams.

No matter how far you get in life, someone has already done something similar before. Don’t let fear hold you back from reaching your goals. Be confident in yourself and take small steps every day towards accomplishing them. And always remember: failure is just another stepping stone on your path to success!

You should always start with a solid foundation: When starting out, think about where your business is going to go in 5 years or more. What products are needed? How many staff members do you need? Where will they be located? How much money will it cost? What kind of money can be made off of each product?

10) Have fun!

It’s easy to get caught up in all of these considerations, but it’s important to remember that you are doing something fun. It’s an adventure—it’s supposed to be enjoyable! So don’t forget to have fun while working hard and planning ahead.

You’ll need that energy and enthusiasm if you want your business to succeed. Plus, you never know what might happen. If your company does take-off (or even just starts earning some revenue), it’s nice to be able to look back on those first days with fondness instead of anxiety or regret.
